It is very difficult to imagine a Bollywood film without the mandatory song and dance sequences. And, rightly so as they offer a quantum of solace in the midst of an emotional or action sequence. Not just that. Some of them are so beautifully choreographed that the dance moves become the hot favourites on the dance floor. Like, for instance, the thumbs down step in Pappu Cant Dance number from Jaane Tu...
Ya Jaane Na is rocking the nation. Prior to that, we had the hottie Mallika Sherawat grooving to the swinging thumbs up sign in the song
Talli Main Talli Ho Gai from
Ugly Aur Pagli, and Akki mesmerising the audience with his hip-hopish moves in
Hare Raam Hare Krishna from the film
Bhool Bhulaiyaa.
And, if we go back a little, sexy Katina Kaif had the nation swaying to the Just Chill number. And, who can forget Saif Ali Khan and Sonali Kulkarnis birdy dance number
Woh Ladki Hai Kahan in Dil Chahta Hai. Says actor Sonali Kulkarni, The birdy step or even the one in Koi Kahe Kehta Rahe are the ones that bring fun to the entire song. Anyone who watches it should be able to relate to it. Dancing is all about reacting to music and just catching the beat, feels Sonali.
And, the same thing goes to the Sukhwinder Singh and Sapna Awashtis train-top hit from Dil Se.. It not only popularised SRKs red jacket, but etched the dance steps in the audiences memory too. The Chaiyya-Chaiyya step with SRK really became a huge hit with kids, with youngsters and with everybody. Everytime the song plays, your mind instantly goes back to the step, says Malaika Arora Khan, whose recent Hoth Rasiley from Welcome has become a rage.
So, when a certain dance move is identified with the song, does the credit go to the music or the choreography? I think it is a good combination of both: hummable music and easy dance steps, says choreographer Bosco. Does that mean they actually keep in mind what the audiences want and so come up with easy steps? Most of the times, we are asked to give steps that the whole nation remembers, but intricate steps work too, mostly with the youngsters, adds Bosco from the duo Bosco-Ceaser. The duo immortalised Adnan Samis Lift Kara De move and has recently choreographed the fist-in-the-air Singh Is Kinng step.
Whats the prerequisite for a dance step then to earn great mileage? The unseen quality or the fresh feel of the step is what does the trick, feels Sonali. Yes, its either the novel movement or something that is so uncomplicated that anyone can copy it.
And, if one goes a little down the line, we have a whole load of them the Kaho Naa...Pyaar Hai step, the Its The Time To Disco move from Kal Ho Naa Ho, the pelvic thrust of Abhishek Bachchan in the song Dus Bahaane, the famous Kajra Re step of the Bachchan trio, the slap-on-the-posterior step in the Masti Ki Paathshaala number, Saroj Khans creative genius in the Ash-Madhuri duet Dola Re Dola, Vaibhavi Merchants choreography for the song Krazy Kiya Re etc. And, one can go on and on and on....
